So it seems from reading above that the trail through the city is changing relatively soon. Is that accurate? Are things being clearly marked?

The new green and white signs along the connector were great! Still a little confusing about where to travel in the road. Signs say on the side of the road but everyone else, including the police, say to ride in the middle of the road.

Hey Josh, That would be correct. Stay in the roadway and follow traffic as you would if you were in a car.

Hey Josh, That would be correct. Stay in the roadway and follow traffic as you would if you were in a car. Close call for Berlin Police Lt. McClure on ATV patrolBY BARBARA TETREAULT THE BERLIN DAILY SUN Thursday October 7,2010 BERLIN — Berlin Police Lt. Richard McClure had a close call while out on ATV patrol Sunday morning. Police argue the incident points to the need to continue educating the public on sharing the road with ATVs. McClure was operating a police department ATV west on Jericho Road followed by Deputy Chief Brian Valerino. McClure signaled to make a left turn onto the ATV Trail at the entrance across from the storage sheds. As he was making his turn, police allege a car traveling west behind a second car and the two ATVs attempted to pass all three vehicles on a double solid line. McClure said he heard the sound of brakes and looked over to see the car braking to a stop just yards from his ATV. The entire incident played out in front of Valerino who estimated the car ended up no more than 15 feet from McClure’s ATV. “I looked at it and thought there was going to be a serious accident -- it was close, very close,” said Valerino. The car continued traveling west and the two officers activated the blue lights and sirens on their ATVs and pursued it until the driver pulled the vehicle over near the entrance to Jericho Mountain State Park. The operator, Roland Smith, 77, of 145 Tamworth Road, Tamworth was issued a summons for reckless operation and speeding. McClure said the officers were traveling the speed limit and the ATVs were operating in the travel lane as required. He said he believes the operator of the car got impatient and perhaps thought the ATVs were slowing down traffic although the speed limit is 30 mph in that section. McClure and Valerino stressed it is against the law to pass an ATV in a no passing zone. McClure said ATVs should be treated the same way as motorcycles. “You wouldn’t pass a motorcycle on a solid double line,” he observed. Police and ATV enthusiasts have worked in recent months to educate both motorists and ATV riders on the proper rules of the road. ATVs are limited to traveling on the designed connector trail through the city. The ATVs must stay on the travel section of the road and not pull to the side of the road. Motor vehicles should not try to go around the ATVs. Drivers who do can be cited for making an illegal pass. Despite Sunday’s incident, the two officers said they believe motorists in Berlin are getting used to ATVs traveling through the city. The two said they spent most of Sunday patrolling York Street in response to a petition residents presented to the city council complaining about noise and potential safety hazards created by the ATVs. Valerino said they found ATV riders were following the speed limit and operating properly. McClure said ATV tires make a humming sound that sometimes creates the impression they are traveling faster than they are. Valerino said there were a lot of ATV riders on the trails last weekend. He estimated between 150 and 200 riders were out enjoying the beautiful weather and foliage Sunday.

Wow, close call. Only good thing about it was that the guy was trying to pass the police and they were able pull him over.
I suggest that there should be signs on both ends of the city trail and on main roads coming into town that notify the motorists that they are supposed to SHARE the road with ATVs and are not to pass. I believe that would be the easiest way educate all motorists that ATVs will be in the road. Also they have no excuse about not knowing about the atvs in the road.

We were all unloading when the police chased down the guy in the van. They flew by the parking lot at full throttle trying to get the van to stop. I talked with both of them for a while afterwards. They seemed like great guys. They said overall the riders do exactly like they're supposed to and the motorists are the problem.

I think after some growing pains and with Sign improvements over the summer People started to "get the idea" and like it. I talked to some Business People along the route and they were VERY exited by the return of tourists to the area via the ATV Trail. We used it atleast a half dozen times this year and enjoyed being able to show friends some of the Famous North Country Hospitality!

Berlin City workers paving the ATV trail at Dead River Park. The ATV club is paying for the work.
from Berlin Daily Sun-May 26, 2011
How much is that??? The Androscoggin Valley ATV Club used grant money to pave a 1/4 mile section of trail that runs from behind Valley Creek Eatery under the railroad trestle, across the Dead River and through Dead River park along Cole Street.
The trail was paved to prevent erosion and also to eliminate dust. This was a great solution that will hopefully serve all users including pedestrians, bicyclists, ATV riders and snowmobilers who use this route as a shortcut across the city.

I wish the club could take the credit for the paving being done on the city trail in the Dead River park, but the funds came from a grant, I think it was an rtp grant, that the city was awarded.
It will make a lot of people happy and a much nicer ride through the park. A great job by the City of Berlin Public Works department....
