We have to be watchful and police ourselves as the letter said. If a community sees that the ATVers are being responsible the connector will be a godsend to the community rather than a liability waiting to happen. I to would hate to see all the hard work you guys did go to waste because of some idiots.

Please use caution while crossing this trail. We have had some snow over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. We also have some ice with the melting of the snow.

This trail is closed until May 23rd or when the State BoT opens the regular trails for the spring. The snowmobile trail is open for atv use. The only problem at this point is that we have one land owner that will not allow atv's to cross the property, so there is no way to get to Jericho Mountain State Park. We are working on this with the land owner and hope to have it open for next winter.
Hope this helps....

hey all...just got work that there are a few bad apples doing wheelies and donuts in the area of the Valley Creek Eatery. The City of Berlin is looking at ways to take care of this. If we get many more complaints we could lose the city trail. We worked hard to get this trail open and would like to build on it in other areas of the city. If you see anyone doing wheelies or going off the trails please call the Berlin PD at (603)752-3131.....thanks AV ATV Club

Yes I agree the city trail is a privilege to be able to ride,it would suck to lose it because of a few [bad apples]I'm all for having fun doughnuts and wheelies but there is a time and a place.lets not give the people who don't want the trail any more reasons to close it down I drive 3-1/2+ hours up and spend plenty of cash to enjoy the riding I enjoy up north lets keep the city trail open Lets set an example so other towns may benefit if the get the support for the same type of trail Ride Safe

Hey all,
I have even more complaints about the city trail. I got some from a city councilor and a few local resident's. Trail patrol and the Berlin PD will be out for the rest of the weekend tryng to slow some of these people down and educating others. Again, if you see anyone doing wheelies, or donuts, tell them to knock it off or call the Berlin PD (603)752-3131. We could lose this trail very QUICKLY.....

A couple of questions about the city trail. ATVs are supposed to go with the flow of taffic, corect? Are vehicles allowed to pass us even in a no passing zone? Should there be a sign at the beginning and the end of the trail letting motorists know that there will be ATVs on the road?
When pulling off of 110, are we supposed stay in the road and make a left hand turn or trun off to the right and then cross the road? If we are supposed to be turning off to the right then i think there should be a sign to let the ATVs know that is what they are supposed to do. I see a car pass a group of ATVs just before they were going to make the left hand turn off of 110. I also believe that the signage is good now but it could be better. I rode the trail for the first time On Sat. and found myself looking up and paying more attention to traffic then looking down at the rode for the white arrows. I think the green ATV diamonds on ther signs should be BIGGER. They are fine for regular trails but they are just too small for the city trail.
I know this is still a work in progress. I thought I would share my 2 cents about the trail and try to make it easier for people who don't know the trail.
Other than that we did 60 miles between Jericho and success. I little dusty but is always a good time. It was real nice to be able to stop in town for lunch and gas.

Johnson...............OHRV's are to ride with the flow of traffic in the travel lane, not the breakdown lane as the painted markings indicate. OHRV's are not to pass cars and cars are not to pass OHRV's unless there is a passing zone which there are not on the connector trail. I confirmed this with Deputy Chief Valerino of the Berlin PD on Wednesday June 2. The OHRV user group is in the spotlight with this city trail. There will be people complaining just to complain. Some people just don't like to see OHRV's on the streets period so everything we do is magnified. My job requires me to drive the streets of Berlin every day and I would need a personal secretary with me to log the traffic violations committed by motorists and motorcycles but yet these are taken for granted. Let one OHRV kick up some dust and the PD gets a call. I'm getting carried away here.............

OZZIE, We really appreciate the service you provide and the Club too! We know we have to police ourselves.....and that the City and the State are watching....I think what Rogy and Johnson are saying is that communication is key to keeping the Trail OPEN! That means better signs, better MAPs and more Patrols! There is No warning for autos and Trucks using Rt. 110 or the Berlin Streets that they are Sharing the road with ATVs, There is No Kiosk spelling out the rules at either end of the Trail.....that Can be found in the Middle of the trail in the Kiosk built by the High School! Lot of good it does there? There can and must be improvements or this trail WILL CLOSE....Let us know how WE CAN HELP! This is the type of signs the state should be providing Clubs!

In today's Berlin Paper......... Chief says reduction in grant funds could hamper trail enforcementBY CRAIG LYONS THE BERLIN DAILY SUNBERLIN — Due to a significant cut in grant money for off-highway recreational vehicles, Police Chief Peter Morency said the Berlin Police Department would be put in a difficult enforcement position. Morency said the cut in funding could create problems for the department’s ability to police and patrol the trail systems without the grant money it had formerly received. During Thursday’s Berlin Police Commission meeting, he said the grant funding was cut from $15,000 to $3,600. Aside from the grant fund reduction Morency said the department would be further limited by the possible budget cuts. As a response the reduced funding, Morency said he’s contacted Executive Councilor Raymond Burton and other officials to see if anything can be done to free up any additional funds for enforcement. Morency said given that Berlin hosts the largest A.T.V. park in the state he would expect the state do its to provide the necessary enforcement for it. While the connector trail through the city opened several weeks ago, Morency said he’s seen some issues already. He added many of these problems are kids acting recklessly while riding on the trails. “We are not going to have the resources to put up with this foolishness,” said Morency. Commissioner Anthony Urban said he feels that 75 percent of the trail users abide by the rules but it’s the 25 percent that are abusing the privilege to ride on the trails. Morency said if riders are unable to follow the rules on the trails, he would recommend closing the trails. He added at this point in time, he can’t support opening any additional connector trails in the city until the ongoing problems are sorted out. Commissioner Steve Griffin said if people could only follow the rules, there is excellent potential with the people being drawn to the area for the trails.

The OHRV Enhanced Enforcement Fund gets around $270,000 per year. Since F&G is only granting a small percentage... its most likely being drained to cover internal costs (Search & Rescue?).
Burton would just need to ask how many OHRV registrations were sold last season, and how much money was granted to local PDs.

Residents Raise Concerns About ATV Trail September 23, 2010 By Barbara Tetreault Berlin Daily SunBERLIN — The Berlin City Council heard a clear message from York Street residents about the ATV route through the city: not on our street. York Street residents presented a petition to the council Monday night, during a public hearing on changes to the city’s ordinance allowing off highway recreational vehicles to drive through the city, asking it to change the trail from going down that street. Residents cited the noise created by the ATVs, potential safety hazards they create on York Street. “Since [the city] started letting ATVs go up and down York Street, it has been horrible,” said Rita Smith, of York Street. Cecil Bigil, of York Street, said the speed of the ATVs is making it unsafe for pedestrians trying to cross the street and even children out playing. Aside from the safety concerns, Bigil said residents can’t enjoy their property because of the noise and the dust being kicked up by the ATVs. Bigil said going through Dead River Park eliminates the safety concerns, and would eliminate the issues York Street residents are having. “We’re hoping something gets done about it,” said Smith. She said the residents aren’t against having the ATV trail, they just don’t want it going down York Street. “I’m 100 percent for the ATV trail and everything it encompasses,” said Smith. “Not just on York Street.” Residents aired their concerns about ATVs on York Street at the public hearing although the ordinance changes don’t specifically deal with operating the vehicles on York Street. Councilor Tim Cayer said the city could still allow the trail to go through either the park or along York Street. He added that leeway is still available in the new ordinance. City Manager Pat MacQueen said when the trail went through Dead River Park, the city received complaints about the dust being stirred up, about riders misbehaving in the park and some complaints from the Valley Creek Eatery. He added the trail was moved to York Street when the ATV festival was in town and kept there because of the complaints regarding the park. In light of the concerns raised by York Street residents, Mayor Paul Grenier asked if Bigil would be interested in working with Cayer and the committee that oversees the trail to help correct some of these problems. He added if everyone puts their heads together, it would be easier to resolve these issues. Councilor Bob Danderson said many of these issues could be resolved by increasing enforcement along this portion of the trail. “We need to start clamping down through the police,” said Danderson. He added the police could easily set up along York Street during high traffic times, and that would eliminate reckless riding and speeding. After hearing the concerns of the York Street residents, the council approved the change to the ATV trail ordinance unanimously.
