Work Party: There is going to be a work party on the city trail. It will be on Hutchins St, in front of the Laidlaw property. We need to remove the trees on the curve near Coos St. The work party will be on Sept 26th, 09 at 7am. We need all kinds of help. This should not take too long. Davis Tree has donated his day and his chipper for the day. You can e-mail me at dano.malone@myfairpoint.net or call me on my cell 603-723-3460.

Just to let everybody know. This work party has been canceled at this time. The club, in it's safety for the volunteers found that there was no coverage in case something happens and someone gets hurt while working on this clean up. Because some of this property is one private property and some on city streets, we are not able to be covered by the City for any liability. For this reason the Androscoggin Valley ATV Club fas canceled this work party. I would like to thank everybody for showing support....

I'll have to review State statutes to find it. But a liability protection for non-profits, and volunteers working for the non-profits is in place from some years ago. The Legislature made the changes after the snowmobile-groomer incident. I'll see if I can find it, and what it specifically covers.

Here it is. Nov 7th at 10 am the city trail that will connect the Jericho Mountain State Park with the Success Trail system will open. Please see the trail map on the club's web site, www.avatvclub.org There is also going to be a public informational meeting to be held soon. Stay tuned for details. Here is the news article that appeared in the Berlin Daily Sun(thanks higgy). BY BARBARA TETREAULT THE BERLIN DAILY SUN October 15, 2009 BERLIN — The grand opening of the ATV trail through Berlin is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.The trail will allow ATVs to travel on selected city streets as a means of connecting trail systems at Jericho Mountain State Park and Success. Connecting the two systems will pro-vide riders with close to 100 miles of ATV trails, with more mileage expected to be available in the future. Hoping to use the opening as a means of promoting Berlin as an ATV destination, the committee overseeing the effort is inviting top state and regional officials to the ceremony, including Gov. John Lynch, DRED Commissioner George Bald, Fish and Game Executive Director Glenn Normandeau, Travel and Tourism Director Alice Desouza, Executive Councilor Raymond Burton, state Senator John Gallus, and the local state representatives. “This is a big deal,” said City Councilor Tim Cayer. The committee met yesterday to go over some fi nal details. One lingering issue is the trail section in the vicinity of Dead River Park. The committee is hoping to get the Salvation Army to allow the trail to cross a section of its property. Without that approval, the committee identified York Street as a backup although there are concerns about the neighborhood’s reaction. Cayer suggested routing the trail through the Dead River Park and repairing the damage that occurs as a result next spring. He said the ATV trail will only be open a few weeks this fall - until the snowmobile trail opens on Dc. 15. He said over the winter, the committee would have time to work out a long-term solution. City Manager Patrick MacQueen reported a crew of inmates from the Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility have done a good job clearing brush on Hutchins Street and will continue the work all the way to the ATV parking area on the Success Pond Road. Public Works foreman Gary Roy said he and Androscoggin Valley ATV Trail Master Erik Anderson have identified seven sign poles that need to be installed along the route - in many cases existing signs posts are able to be used. The posts and diamond trail markings are awaiting the return of some dry warmer weather to get put in place. Roy said the weather forecast looks promising next week to allow that work to get done. MacQueen said Public Service of N.H. has agreed to allow the city to put a kiosk up in Tondreau Park. Part of the kiosk will contain information on the connecting trail and maps of the entire ATV trail system in the valley. The other half would contain local advertising. The committee discussed whether the kiosk should be placed at the southern or northern end of the park and decided on the southern end. Cayer said high school students have agreed to build the kiosk. The cost of the materials is just under $2,000 which the city expects it will be able to cover using grant money. Cayer said he has also spoke to the high school’s woodworking and art departments about making some informational signs and reported the students are enthusiastic about getting involved in the project. Police Chief Peter Morency reminded the committee that it had decided to put signs at the entrances, outlining the rules and regulations of the trail. For example, certified underage drivers will be able to use the trail if accompanied by an adult over 25. He emphasized safety is important if the city wants the trail to be a success. The committee agreed that such signs should be placed at trail heads and parking areas. The police department will also be scheduling a series of informational hearings at city hall to educate the public about the trail and proper use.

For whatever reason the link brings you to a commercial site rather than AVATV's site. www.avatvclub.org/ should work. I think it is the extra period in the URL. Great work guys!!!! I can't wait to get up there and try out Jericho and be able to go into Berlin.

This was a letter in the Berlin Daily Sun "letters to the editor" section of yesterday's paper. It seems to also have made the front page f the Union Leader.
A lot of people worked hard of this trail to connect Jericho Mountain State park to Success. It would be a shame if after all that work, that it was closed before it was hardlt used. I also think that we can connect other trails together, like Success to Millsfield.
So, I am asking people that are on the connector trail to police others that are not following the rules set up be the City of Berlin and the Berlin PD. If you see someone off the trail, let them know that and get them back on the trail. If you have to get there reg number and call the Berlin PD, 752-3131 and let them know. we need to get this taken care of quickly, or the trail will be closed.
Thank you and enjoy the trail....
We need to stop the ATV connector trail
To the editor: I am writing this about the new connector trail. It has been open for the last week and if this is how it is going to be used we need to terminate it’s use. There was a lot of work many people to get this trail open but then the ball was dropped. I have seen children no more then eight years of age on the trail, unregistered four wheelers, dirt bikes that fl y past four wheelers, and kids riding two on a four wheeler that is only meant for one, and leaving the trail to access other roads. The city is setting itself up for a major suit if this is allowed to continue. Can we really afford this? Parents need to take responsibility for their children as no one under the age of sixteen should be using this route. Next in line is the police department who should be ticket-ing these individuals and the word would get out that you can’t do something that is not legal. It doesn’t take long look at all the areas you drive that you know you had better watch out as this particular area is known for handing out tickets. You don’t have to even patrol to see what is going on illegally. The first thing that the police department will say is that they need more money to patrol the trail. I think that for the number of police officers the city has that with just common sense they can schedule officers for their shift, splitting it among everyone. OOPS, I forgot our officers work nine to five evenings and weekends off. It’s time that things need to start changing or close the connector trail down before someone gets killed or injured and the city is hung out to dry. Parents shame on you for letting your young children loose with the power that these four wheelers have, maybe you don’t think that anything can happen but when they are out of your sight you would be surprised at what they do. Let’s get in touch with the mayor and council to let them know that while this connector is just beginning let’s stop a tragedy from happening.
Beverly Ingersoll Berlin
THE BERLIN DAILY SUN, Wednesday, November 18, –––––––––––––––––––
This is not what YOU want to see on the Front page of the Union Leader!!!!!! Hopefully this is an Isolated matter.... and doesn't get out of Hand........Time to beef up the TrailPatrol presence on the City Connector Trail.

Parents need to realize that children must have safety certification (12) to be on the roads, and can not carry a passenger regardless of what model OHRV they are operating. Also, I thought that no one was to pass due to possible yellow line violations in the ordinance?
I hope this works out for the City.
