Reverse

Hello all: I have a Honda 2002 TRX500FA ATV. When it is in reverse gear and actually backing up, as if to turn around, the machine spits, sputters and even backfires if I give it a lot of throttle. It will not go over a certain speed. And it does not have a reverse override button. Once back in drive, everything is fine and no spitting, sputtering or back fire. It runs and idles great. Would anyone of you know whether this is normal reverse and is sort of a safety feature to prevent an operator from going in excess speed in reverse? Or do I have a problem on my hands? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

A lot of ATV makers put in a "reverse override" button that you can push to go faster in reverse without the hesitation and sputtering. On my Polaris' quads it's a yellow button on the left handlebar where my light switch is. You probably have something similar. The safety system on most quads keeps the rpms at a certain limit so people don't kill themselves going backwards.

Hello moosehenden: Thanks for the reply. My Artic Cat had a reverse override button. On my Honda 2002 TRX500FA, there is no such button. One person tells me it is suppose to be sputtering and spitting in reverse, as it is a safety feature. The next person tells me it's an electrical problem and we all know how tough those can be to find. The next guy says it's a carburation problem. And guess what, Honda headquarters can't help me at all. Oh well, I'll find somebody who can help someday.

Well, I guess as long as you can get into reverse to get it on and off your truck or trailer and be able to back up when needed on the trails it's a good thing.
