Hi riders,
I plan to take my son up to the north country to ride for four days for his 18th birthday (starting Mon Jun 29th), but due to logistics snags, I'm having a hard time figuring out where to go. And so far contacting clubs has brought mixed results at best (only two actually got back to me).
Here's what I'm looking for:
1) Lots of trails. 2) Width allowance for Gator XUV (59.5"). 3) Trail side camping (tent, roughing it is absolutely fine). 4) Short of breaking rules (which we will NOT do), we do want some freedom to ride without being hassled. 5) Possible moose sightings (my son's never seen one). 6) Trail side access to some trout fishing. 7) Scenic views for some photos and general ohhing and ahhing. 8) Nearby services, namely ice and fuel.
I am getting closer. Millsfield sounds good, but the camping arrangement could be better. Perry Stream sounds good but cannot get a call back from the campground yet so... I don't know. Jericho says it will offer trail side the camping and sounds good, but I am under the impression that those services are not yet available. Stratford sounds good but I cannot get a call back so I don't know if the Gator is okay and if they have trail side camping. Success.... I have no info.
This is a special trip. My son's birthday, he graduated, and next month he will move out on his own. Plus, I only get one week off all summer. Thus, I want this trip to be very successful and enjoyable.
Can anyone help me please?
Thanks. Mike Cherim Nottingham NH

Mike as much as I'd like to send you to Success,Jericho or Millsfield They don't fill all of what your Looking for....You would be Happy with Either North Stratford or Pittsburg!!!!They have everything on your list, North Stratford with Great Camp Grounds like Big Rock with good trail access. carlasbigrockblog.blogspot.com/ Pittsburgh might be more productive for MOOSE Pictures ! www.mountainviewcabinsandcampground.com/home/home.html

gotmoxie: Thanks for that. After even more research, and the recommendation of a friend who has gone riding there for decades, I decided on Perry's Stream in Pittsburg, staying that Mountain View Campground. It sounds perfect. A 3.5-4 hour drive doesn't sound like a big thrill, but we'll set out at 5:00 am, heading north, traffic should be light to non-existent. We'll skirt Conway (opting to ride up on 16 from here). Driving north is so beautiful so that's the good side of the drive. On the way back we plan to ride Jericho Mountain for the day, and that'll ease the drive back. North Stratford ended up being number two for the simple reason is that I never got a response from them (tried a while back, too) while Pittsburg's reply was almost immediate (much to my delight). snowman: I appreciate your response, but I have to wonder if your Fish and Game contact didn't have the right information and instead offered an opinion. A Gator isn't an ATV that's for sure, but rather a UTV. But more specifically, according to the state, it is an OHRV and I was able to register it for recreational use as such. I did so only after talking to the *state to learn where it was allowed and barred by gates or policy. I was told that I could ride on any designated ATV trail that didn't have gates for 50" (ATV in NH). I was given a list of possibles including those mentioned above. Of the many people I've talked to about this, your contact is the first to offer a contrary opinion. *I spoke with: Bill Gegas, Program Specialist, New Hampshire Bureau of Trails @nobodyinparticular: My son and I have ATVs and have ridden for years. The Gator, though, we use on our property for work. The thing was pretty expensive though so we decided we'd try to get some recreational value from it as well. We really love the thing (despite being 59.5" wide). I was simply amazed that I couldn't get it stuck on the trails on my property, which have some really nasty places. Low gearing, the front and back diffs both locked, 11/12" clearance and aggressive tires and it just seemed to claw its way through the worst of it.

I just came back from both Jericho and Success trailheads. Both measure about 70" wide. So a UTV should not have any problems and are allowed in both places. The widest UTV on the market is Honda's Big Red and that width is 64". So no one should have problems with their ATV's.

MIKE i wasen't calling a utv a atv i was just saying a utv is allowed at jerico only , everywhere else it has to meet atv rules , no wider then 50" , less then 1000lbs and low pressure tires. that came from tracy in ohrv dept. at fish and game. don't get me wrong i think they should be allowed on anytrail it fits on like you said we spend anought money buying them we should be able to ride them. snowman

This Topic has come up numerous times on other sites and I Believe the Bot and Fish and Game have to come to grips with the explosion of Utvs ride on NH Trails now.....There is law that pertains to Lands owned by the State and Jericho is only one open to Utvs mentioned...But IF the Private Land Owner gives a Club Permission for OHRVs on HIS Property the Fish and Game have no say to the contrary...Towns do and thats a SUBJECT BETTER NOT OPENED!!!!! and you should know that snowman!

The gates at Jericho and success are set at 60". Our prowler makes it through, it's tight but can make it through . There is no camping at Jericho with 55 miles of trails. The scenic views are great and a major brook runing through the park.
